Submarine or Boat

Boat or Submarine
Scientists: Hannah and Olivia

Question/Goal/ problem
What shape of container will hold the most weight ?

Hypothesis (The shape I have chosen and why I think it is the best shape)
Olivia and I have chosen a pan shape because we think that if it is spread out it will float better and we can fit heaps in it.

Materials
Container filled with water, modelling clay, old coins

Method (What I did)
Create a boat out of modelling clay.
Fill the container with water.
Place the boat carefully onto the water so it floats.
One at a time , put coins carefully into the boat . Count how many coins are in the boat before it sinks.
Observation/ Analyse (What happened and why I think it happened)
Our creation floated and carried seven coins because it was spread out and light. It was also big so it could carry more coins.

Conclusion  (What I discovered about floating/ sinking )

I found out the a piece of paper could float and carry 5 coins because when Mr Ford put the coins in the middle it was pushing the middle down and making the sides float.

Centripetal Force Experiment

Hypothesis: I predict that the water is going to stick to the back of the bucket. I think that when I start to spin faster and faster the bucket will get heavier because the air will be slowing the bucket and I down and that way the bucket will get heavier.

Variables we must control: Variables Control Liquid, Each bucket filled to the second mark to ensure that they have the same amount of water. Speed, We all need to spin around about the same speed or the water will fall out if you are going to slow. Position, You need to make sure that the bucket is not facing down to the ground. Technique, Everyone needs to start and finish the same. We all need to spin the same way.

Method:
1. Get a bucket and fill it to the second mark
2. Hold the bucket in front of you with your fingers under the rim of the bucket.
3. Start to spin nice and slow then get faster and faster
4. Watch and see what the water is doing
5. That is called Centripetal Force.

Results: My prediction was right that the water was going to stick to the back of the bucket and I was right that it was going to get heavier and heavier. All the water stayed in the bucket but when you started to slow down the water wanted to keep spinning around so there were spillages at the end. Gravity didn’t work because I thought that when we were slowing down the water was going to fall out but it didn’t. The Centripetal Force pushed the water to the back of the bucket.

Don't fall on my head water!

I am getting dizzy!

It is working!

Does air have weight?

Does air have weight experiment

Equipment:
  • Ruler
  • Table
  • Person to Karate chop
  • 2 pieces of News paper

Prediction:
I think that air has no weight because we can’t feel it on us and if you are looking at some scales with nothing but air on it, the scales say it weighs nothing.

What happened:
When Ollie Karate chopped the ruler and it went flying. Mr M scrunched up a piece of newspaper and put it on the end of the ruler which is on the table then Ollie Karate chopped it again. The paper went flying and the ruler went not so far. Next we put the paper on the the ruler flat with no air under it then Ollie karate chopped the ruler and the ruler snapped because of the weight of the air pushing on the paper.

We tried it again and no one could snap it apart from Mr Moriarty. When we had all tried Mr Moriarty decided that he would have a go so we made the paper nice and flat with no air under the paper and the ruler was more than half on the table. Mr Moriarty karate chopped it and the ruler snapped! We were all so excited. "Just a little bit of blood." Mr M said.
I was wrong after all:-(

I still think that the ruler is going to go flying

Science: Air Exists

What is air?
What causes air to move?

Experiment: Air exists

Equiptment
  • Container filled with water
  • Jar
  • Paper towel

Prediction
It think that the paper will stay dry because the air is trapped in the jar with no way to escape.

Observe
When you put the paper towel in the jar and then place the jar in the water upside down and then lift the jar out of the water and the paper towel will still be dry.

Explain

In our groups, we all run down to the water troth and fill our bucket with water then we all run back to the class. We scrunch up the paper towel and put it in the jar and then tip it upside down and place it in the bottom of the bucket then lift it back up. The paper towel stays dry. Why? Because the jar is filled with air and then when you put the paper towel in the jar it is surrounded by air so when you put the jar under the water facing down the air has no way to escape.

Wow, it actually worked!

First Parachute jump science

Equiptment
  • Scissors
  • Plastic bag
  • Straw
  • Cello tape

Prediction:
I thought that the parachute was going to fall down and go all messy.

Observe:
First you cut the straw into 8ths till you reach the bendy part. Next you cut the handles and the bottom off the plastic bag then cut the plastic bag into halves and then cut one of the halves into squares. Next you origami fold the square into 16ths then cut the top off the shape that you have made. Open the plastic and you should see a circle. Now you place the cut straw on the plastic and spread them out evenly. Tape them down with cello tape and then tape the end of the straw closed. Now turn the parachute over and let it go up in the air. You have made a Parachute.

  1. Who made the first parachute drop and when? Andre-Jacque Garnerin, October 22 1797
  2. What Nationality was he? French
  3. Did he receive any prizes for completing this amazing feat? No
  4. Describe the parachute. The parachute was seven-metre silk parachute
  5. Describe how the drop took place. When he landed he was not injured but it was a violent landing.
  6. From what height did he fall from? Approximately 3,000 feet.
  7. Who was his student and what fame did she reach? First ever female parachutist. His student was his wife.

Henna Hands

Imaan invited her mum to come into our class and do Henna on the girls hands. We all got different designs on our hands and they all look really cool. The reason that she came in is because in our class, we are learning about India. All the henna looked really cool. When she was putting it on us, the Henna paste was very cold. After it was put on us, we had to wait till it was dry. For me, it took about 1 and a half hours for it to dry and then for it to fall off. When the brown paste fell off, it went bright orange.
Here is an image of it when it was brown and wet.

GeoGuessr

Today in class, we went onto a site and it was called GeoGuessr. What we had to do was they would give you a place in the world and we had to guess where it was. We had to do it with our learning buddies and my learning buddy is Josh. Our highest score was 7427. How you got the points is, where you guessed where the place was, it would give you points for how close of far away you were.
Here is a picture of one of the sets of places I had to try.

Hannah's Walkathon Reflection

Reflection for The Walkathon

(My team name: Leopards)

· Something I was pleased with was that my team worked together really well like when we were encouraging each other because it was quite a long way for us while we were walking.
· I really enjoyed learning different things about my group because some of the people I don’t know that much about.
· Something I found hard was thinking of a chant for our group because we had to rhyme the words.
· Something that made me think was how much time we spent walking all together because a full hour is 60 minutes and it is kind of different adding up the time. In the end we spent 1 hour and 18 minutes walking.
· Something I want to get better at is walking faster with my group and encouraging my team more.

What can I do about it?
I can encourage others more like when we are at a triathlon or something like that.
When I am walking with others, I can stay with them

My Taonga

Challenge Tree
Things that are special to my family

Two things that are special to my family are a belt and three medals. It is my Dad's grandfather on my Nana’s side of the family. His name is Norman Godkin.

Norman was in World War 1 and was a prisoner of war. He ripped the belt off a train seat and sewed the buttons he had collected. The buttons and badges were from other soldiers. Many are from different countries and many are from soldiers that died. There is also a bullet on his belt which came out of his leg. Here are some photo's of the belt and the badges.

Production Diary, Part two.

Day 2:

We are nearly finished our song and right now, I'm freaking out. We have to perform in front of all the team five teachers and students and I don’t want to muck up or let my team down.

We are about to perform in front of the teachers and it is really nerve breaking. I look at the clock as my friend Olivia says to me "we will all have a practice at morning tea just so that we can all remember the moves again.” I felt so relieved. RRRRRIIIIINNNNNGGGG!!! Goes the morning tea bell. “The rest of the production will go on after morning tea,” says Miss Hill. I think to myself, "phew!” Now the group and I will have the chance to practice one more time and get all the moves back into our heads and so that we don’t stuff up on stage. Morning tea is over and now we all have to perform our dance on stage in front of all team five and I am sitting down, trying to remember all the moves. I am not too sure so I had to ask Olivia. She said that I was right. I felt so scared. All of a sudden we got called up to the stage. It was our time to perform and now I was really nervous.

Production Diary. Part one.

This is a video of my group dancing to our song.

This is a video of the boys doing our dance while they are watching.

Production Diary:

Day one:

Hello,
I’m Hannah and in the Parkvale Live production, I'm a dancer. My dance group has chosen the song Stronger by Kelly Clarkson. It is going really well so far. I am really excited and nervous at the same time. I am mostly excited that we get to go up onto stage and perform our dance in front of everyone in the spotlight. Our dance is really good but it is getting even better as we are adding more onto it. It is getting easier to remember the moves, to get better at the moves and to come up with ideas for the song as it goes on.

In my group, there is five of us, Courtney, Charlotte, Lily, Olivia and me. We are all working together really well and coming up with great moves by showing Parkvale P.R.I.D.E.

Day three:

This week, we have been in the hall all week and we have been going through the whole production, over and over again. My group is working on BIG, BOLD ACTIONS and to do a box step.

This all of my group.

This is my group doing the action STRONGER!!!

Greek Olympic Vases

This week at school we have been creating art on Greek Olympic Vases. My story was based on Valerie Adams at this Olympics. We got the idea from the little kids in Room 5.

Valerie Adams has just thrown and she got just over 20 metres. Now it is Nadzeya Ostapchuk is about to throw. She has thrown over Valerie Adams. Nadzeya Ostapchuk is awarded a gold medal. The next thing that you know Valerie Adams has got the gold medal because Nadzeya Ostapchuk was on drugs.

Here is my art that I created.

Hope you enjoy.

White Pine Bush and Lake Tautira

Renee and my plant that we planted together.

One of the Plants that one of us planted.
Half of the group that went on the trip.
On the 6th of August, 2012, some seniors got chosen to go to White Pine Bush and Lake Tautira to learn about nature and to plant some little plants. We all got chosen by the teacher and he chose us for a reason. While we were at White Pine Bush, the people that worked there, they asked us lots of questions and gave us lots of information on trees and nature.

Here are some pictures on our special trip.

The Lorax

Last week we read the story of The Lorax. The Lorax book is all about a little monster and he is the guardian  of the Truffler trees which are funny tall trees. There is a man and he comes along and chops down
all the trees and the Lorax is the only person with a Truffler tree seed and so he gives it to this boy and he is relaying on him to make a forest of Truffler trees again. My teacher said that we had to do some art on the Lorax and we could make it how we liked and this is what I did.
This is my art that I did on The Lorax

The incredible journey of Cutey the Container

Incredible Journey

14/5/2012-23/5/12

Day 1:

Hi, my name is Cutey the Container and I am going to tell you how I got to the Pacific Rubbish Vortex because I want you help me get the message that all the people will start recycling not dumping trash on the ground.

I was sitting in the factory getting made with all the other containers but this was the problem, I was the last one in the row and and all the ones at the end always don’t get made properly because often there is not enough to be made so they get chucked away.

It was my turn to be made and lucky there was enough plastic to make me. That does not happen very often so I was very lucky to survive it. Back to the story, so I was sitting there waiting for something to be put into me then all of a sudden something picked me up and put me on this bigger table and then poured some watery stuff into me and it smelt like something rotten but I wasn’t sure. Something big a hairy put a hat or something like that onto my head and then the rotten stuff was stuck inside me. That is how my life began.

Day 2:

I woke up the next day and I was in a in a big dark room when I was sitting there wondering where I was when the whole room started moving. I thought to myself, hang on a minute if I am in a room moving, well is that what the hairy beasts talking about putting us into this dark room with no lights. I think  they called it the... I don’t know what they said but I think we should call it the container moving mobile. All of a sudden the place that I was in stopped. BANG!!! I could see light again, it was like a miracle had just appeared. I” could not believe my eyes! “Wow” Outside is the most beautiful place I have ever seen. The next thing I know I was getting lifted up and put into a little mini car. I had no idea where I was and to me that was a scary thing. The cart started moving and then I got lifted up onto a shelf. Then the hairy beasts left me on this shelf and with all these other people around me with all my friends in the mini car. I felt pretty confused then all the people went away. I just sat there waiting and waiting until...

Day 3:

The next day there was way more people when all of a sudden another person picked me up and put me in there mini car and then drove away. That was a very sad part of my life because I really didn’t want to leave my friends but I decided that maybe where I was going was a better place than where I am at the moment. I went past this big scanner and then into a bag. The bag had a sign on it saying New World. Then I saw light again but this time I was at a house that I had never seen before, Then I got put into a house then into a  pantry. It was dim and dark in there  but the good thing about it was that I got to see all my friends again.

Day 4:

That was the day that I got eaten by another hairy beast. Now I was all alone with no rotten, slimy stuff inside me, in a way that felt kinda good in a way. I got thrown in the trash with some of my old friends of mine. It was great catching up with my old friends and I really wish I could stay with them but unfortunately I couldn’t because... “ AHHH” All of a sudden a big people mover picked up the trash and put it into a big truck filled with other rubbish then the  big truck tipped us out into a big hole called a landfill. The landfill stunk of rubbish and oil or gases. I hated that smell because it reminded me of when I was getting made because I don’t like being reminded of that because it always made me cry. “Boo Hoo Hoo” I cried. It was one of the most saddest moment in my life because I miss all my friends. I don’t know where all of them went but I really want to catch up with them one day soon. SMASH!!! We all got piled on by some others of my friends. Day by day, month by month, every day more and more rubbish got dumped into the landfill then all of  a sudden a huge gaze of wind, like a bowl of soup being stirred with a spoon, picked us all up and swooped us out to the ocean. While we were out in the ocean, we floated away over to the middle of the ocean where we found The Great Pacific Garbage Vortex. The Great Pacific Garbage Vortex is a huge pile of rubbish and plastic in the middle of the ocean and it is twice the size of Texas. People reading this story please beware of what you throw on the ground and please don’t litter.

WALT Persuade Recycle Plastic

Dear Parkvale School,

Plastic should be recycled more often otherwise we will kill Native Animals and we will disturb the animals. We will also pollute the Earth and living creatures will die.

If we don’t save the Earth and we keep polluting the world will be a sad place because there will be no animals because they would have all died of being suffocated or of sickness from rubbish been polluted.

As we throw away this plastic it goes into a landfill or dump that most of it gets blown away into the sea where it is going into The Great Pacific Rubbish Vortex in the sea. The Great Pacific Rubbish Vortex is a huge pile of rubbish in the middle of the sea and it is twice the size of Texas and that should change by not making it bigger but not adding to it.

Instead of putting rubbish in the rubbish bin you can recycle stuff and make things needed around like a pencil holder to put your pens and pencils in. Once you have made a pencil holder you can decorate it with stuff like fabric and shapes or ribbon and if you are a girl ( like me,) you can put some sparkle on to it to make it look all girly.

Thanks lots!!!
