Maths Challenge Bag

Lately, Bree and I have been trying to figure out all these maths questions out of a bag. They were all in little containers and you had to figure out the what was the answer. Bree and I decided to try and do them all and we did it.

Mathletics

Over the last past week I have been designing a mathletics poster for maths. I have just finished and I think that it looks pretty cool. I am going to enter it in a competition with all of the other childrens designs.

Reflection for Mathletics
Something I was pleased with was that my design went well because I didn’t do that much mistakes.                        
I really enjoyed learning how to draw different designs because some of them I have never done before.                

Something I found hard was drawing the circle in vivid because the vivid didn’t fit in the compass.
Something that made me think was what design was going to do for my final design because I wanted it to look really cool.              
Something I want to get better at is not making big blobs in the middle of my design when I can’t draw the circles.
         
What can I do about it? Find a different way to get the vivid in the compass.

Converting to Decimal and Fraction Answers

In the holidays, in my spare time I have been finishing some maths that we have been doing at school. What we have been doing is Miss Hill has been giving us some fractions and that would be our problem. We had to add them together and find the decimal answer and the fraction answer.

Jelly-Bean Problem



This is a maths problem that Mr Moriarty sent to us for homework. This is what the problem is: I picked up a handful of jelly beans. One - third of them were red. What might a drawing of the jelly beans look like.

The Tower of Hanoi



This puzzle was invented in 1883 by the French mathematician Edouard Lucas.
The aim of the puzzle is to mover the tower to another rod. here are the rules:

  • You may only move one disc at a time
  • You may not place a larger disc on top of a smaller disc
  1. What is the fewest number of moves it would take to solve the puzzle?
How I worked it out is:
Since there are 4 levels on the tower, it will take 15 moves to move the whole tower to another rod.
This is how I worked it out:

    2.  What is the fewest number of moves it would take to solve the puzzle if there were 9 discs in             the tower?
How I worked it out is:
I worked out the pattern. Every time you add a level to the tower it makes you have to use more moves to get them back into order and on another rod.
Pattern is:  Each time you add a level the tower, to get the final amount of moves you have to double the previous amount of moves then add one more move to the answer.

This is how I worked out how many moves it would take:

  • 1 level - 1 move
  • 2 level - 3 moves
  • 3 level - 7 moves
  • 4 level - 15 moves
  • 5 level - 31 moves
  • 6 level - 63 moves
  • 7 level - 127 moves
  • 8 level - 255 moves
  • 9 level - 511 moves

So it will take 511 moves to get the whole tower to another rod if there were 9 levels on it.

Reflection for Maths and my Showme

Reflection for Maths

In maths yesterday we had to add up the points for the swimming sports. 1st place was worth 10 points, 2nd was worth 7 points, 3rd was worth 5 points and for



· Something I was pleased with was that I only got 1 answer wrong when we were adding up the points but I fixed it up at the end because we all went through them and were finding out what was the right answer.


· I really enjoyed doing the times tables above 12 because they were quite challenging we had to use a different strategy to work them out.

· Something I found hard was keeping up with the numbers of where each house came and then working them out.
· Something that made me think was my times tables above 12 because I don’t know them that well.

· Something I want to get better at is my times tables above 12.

         Something I  can do about it is work on them at home and not just do my times tables up to 12, I will do them above 12.

For homework this week we had to solve this problem and this is how I worked it out. The question was The dairy owner had 73 Powerade bottles left. Then she sold 29. How many has she got left?






The question is asking 73-29=?

70-20=50
53-9=44

73-29=44

29+1=30
30+40=70
70+3=73
40+1+3=44
Mr.M said that we can mix all the numbers up to fit where we are learning so that is what I did.

Maths Reflection



Something I was pleased with was that at the end, me and Natasha were only 1 off the real answer because we were estimating and we estimated right.



I really enjoyed learning Probability because it was really fun and we had to predict which I love doing.



Something I found hard was at first, thinking about words that describe Probability because I didn’t know what it is.



 Something that made me think was justifying why we predicted how many  Red, Yellow and Blue blocks there were in the bag.



 Something I want to get better at is Probability.
What can I do about it? I can work at it more in class.

How many numbers can you make




Maths Problems

· Something I was pleased with was this maths section because I understood all the things that we were doing.
                            

· I really enjoyed learning what numbers we can make with 1, 0, 2, 7, 8 and 4 because we got up to high numbers.

· Something I found hard was Problem 2 because I got confused when I was doing it.
· Something that made me think was what numbers could we make with 7 in the tenths place because there was a lot of them and I was trying to get them all but I didn’t get there.

                  
· Something I want to get better at is using a pattern to figure out a questions.
          What can I do about it? I can practice for homework each night.

Reflection for Fractions and Decimals

· Something I was pleased with was that I understood decimals more than I thought I would because at first it was really confusing but I got it in the end.
                            


· I really enjoyed learning decimals because they were very interesting and they had different ways to learn them

and they were really fun as well.



· Something I found hard was at the time that we were in room 21, it was confusing what Mrs Harvey was saying write the decimal for....

· Something that made me think was fractions because when we had to find the fraction in a number.



· Something I want to get better at is getting faster at decimals.

What can I do about it? I can practice on the decimal game that Mr Moriarty sent us.

Reflection on Maths time







Reflection for maths

· Something I was pleased with was that I got most of the answers that the whole class did because at first I only had all the easy answers but then I got most of them at the end.
                            

· I really enjoyed learning rounding to the nearest hundred and rounding  to the nearest ten because I didn’t really get rounding but I got there in the end.

                  

· Something I found hard was Problem 1 at first because I found it hard hard we had to round to 2000 in kms.
· Something that made me think was _ x _ = 360. The teacher gave us a clue that one of the numbers ended in zero (0). These are the answers that I came up with...

  1. 36x10=360
  2. 1x360=360
  3. 180x2=360
  4. 60x6=360
  5. 90x4=360

                 

· Something I want to get better at is rounding.
What can I do about it? What I can do about it is practice, practice, practice makes perfect.
